If you aren't a yaoi fan, and have no exposure to the gay people's feelings, it's not easy to understand the other person. So they tend to think that liking a guy is out of the norm. So the crush must have thought he was already over him, and like the pretty girl which is "normal" for a straight guy.
Also it difficult because while aware of it, its hard to be sure of someone elses feelings. If you were wrong and you say something then there is the potential to make everything very awkward.
