I might understand if maybe she didn't swim well, or if ocean swimming was different than pool and took getting used to, but not at ALL? That threw things off for me from the start - it didn't make sense. Her mother simply infuriated me. She doesn't even qualify for the title. Even in the end, you don't know why she's there.
In the end you don't even get a sense of completion from this... resolution, maybe, but not completion. It leaves you hanging much the way life does - with the feeling that so long as people are alive, there are still chapters yet to be written and new arcs yet to start, only you won't get to see them. I guess the best description for the end is, "hopeful?"? Had seven art, though.
