I think this was what the duke meant as well. Like "shackled" by poverty; not being able to do the things she wanted because she needs to help her family by earning money. I don't think she's brainwashed or anything, maybe just a strong sense of responsibility since she's the eldest?
In addition, if she didn't agree to go along with the Duke he could've ruined her and her family's life. It's more like she's doing this out of necessity
