I didn't mean it to be offensive saying that she's just a replacement.. sorry if my comment looked like I meant that.. what i meant was, she was originally there, brought by their parents with the intention to "use" her as a replacement for their dead sister/daughter or so that she could fill in the hole in their hearts caused by their dead daughter which makes me uncomfortable with the dating stuff
but that was the feelings of the parents, not the kids. And its not like Eugene ever forced her to like him back, you can see how they acted around each other. Even if she did have resemblance to their dead sister, she had been gone for years, it wasn't like they fell in love with her as kids. They fell after years of being away from each other and only writing letters as a form of communication.
Actually the spoilers from the novel mentioned only her hair is similar to the dead sister. The resemblance was only when they were small Hari was undernourished due to poverty while the sis due to being sick. When Hari already receive the appropriate nourishment she grow up well and look nothing like the dead sis
