No Im pretty sure he isn’t apologizing bc he is afraid I mean in my eyes it doesn’t look like he is afraid at all he honestly looks kinda relieved I think along the way he ended up falling in love with him and I think he would have defended him at court but didn’t bc he was just so I’m shock with how fast things were moving and just how much had happen at least that’s how I see it and think

I think he's apologizing because he feels guilty. He thinks he ruined his life. He said "a lot of people liked me, but none of their lives have been ruined because of me."
Probably during 10 hears he kept feeling guilty and that's why he was waiting for him to get revenge on him.
yeah he unfortunately fell in love with him over time, now playing into the title, stockholm syndrome.
