Idk if you ended up giving it a go, but she starts selfish because of her background and then changes as the story goes on. It's just that character development tends to be rare in shoujo. This one is worth a read.
How good is the development? Is it relatively quick?
I wouldn't say it's quick or slow. I'd say it was just right. I didn't really find her selfishness that bad. There were a couple of scenes where I thought they were going a bad direction for my tastes, but those were resolved almost immediately after they happened.
She's selfish because she's never had anyone. Nobody's put her first in her previous life so she has to put herself first. At the same time, part of that 'selfishness' is not really understanding what it is to be selfless. She helps people because she doesn't want the negative outcome and calls it 'selfish'.
As she is exposed to more people and experiences, she becomes kinder and less selfish.
Might still not be for you, just wanting to give a better idea of what it's like.
