Sorry to tell you, he unfortunately doesn't really get any...
Richard actually wouldn't have saved or cared for Haven if he didn't think she was similar to Illyan, and his obsession with his first love is borderline creepy/psychopathic. For a majority of the book ends up projecting his love for Illyan onto Haven.
(Illyan was 40 when she died and went into the body of 12 year old Haven, and ends up being courted by Richard(15) who is 25 years her minor orzlll. In the present timeline Illyan is 35 before her death but it's still a 20-year physical gap.)

Not really no. The plot is pretty straightforward and not really mind-blowing. There's a part that's really confusing because it's paradoxical because at one point two Illyans exist simultaneously and there's no good explanation as to why.
