The back story is even more of a reason for them not to get together. The reason that they are that close in the first place is because they aren't interested in each other in that way. They already have the best relationship in this story, beaten only by the Weber family relationships. Roger-Irene relationship is close behind. Neither of these two friendships need to be devalued by bringing in sexual interactions.
Close friendships are the most precious and the purest of all "peer-to-peer" social relationships. Friendships are easily capable of being one of the most important personal relationships on their own. They don't need to depend on any sexual interest for their strength. Deep and loyal friendships are the only relationships that can compete with unconditional and selfless love of immediate kin relationships, like filial and fraternal ones.
You guys really need to quit the stupid mentality that thinks of sexual relationships as being "more than" friends and ditch this bad habit of feeling frustrated each time a close social relationships central to a story don't end up sexual.
the brother and the ML should end up together at this point since they have more chemistry in a nutshell
