Looks like it's just a flashback and they labeled it as a side story. Not the first time I've seen side stories between seasons etc.

chapter 16 is labeled as “(the end)” on the official site tho and they only add that for an actual ending and not a season finale

Seems like it, 4 side story chapters and that's it. I've seen plenty of rushed endings but this was like they just stopped halfway through lol
