It seems more naive to me- giving the child an instant illusionary family at the expense of his relationships with others in the future vs. having him got through adversity now but to grow and have a regular life.

Slowly isolating a kid from family members and friends – physically and emotionally, undermining relationships with parents and friends to show that “no one understands you like I do" are signs of grooming behaviour.
