It would have been a problem (I think) because if he hadn't been mark his pheromones would have been spread forever and ever (I think).
I'm not sure about that part, but that's why he was so fixated with the issue...

The ending was too sudden. The problem was resolved easily...which would have not been a problem if they just decided to be a couple since first chapter. But since I love happy endings, I still like it.
