she doesn’t want etienne to be so independent to the point where he leaves her in the dust. she wants to be able to control him and she just couldn’t if he got merits bc then his self confidence and support system would improve meaning that he no longer needs her

Why would you go out of your way to make yourself more like a living doll? I don't think she thought pass having power. Your son is weak and Nobody respects him. You didn't try to get him any merits you just thought him being the blood born son of the emperor is all it took.
