YES!! I think just like you do!! It's never easy to say goodbye (it hurt to read) but I believe Trevor genuinely loved Gene and that's why he let him go. And the fact that Gene had planned to go back, after all those years... No matter how strong their love was, some people are not in the right place in their lives to be in a relationship yet. Now that they're reunited, they have the opportunity to love each other, both having greater grounds.
Just because you find a man doesn't mean all of your life problem's will be solved. Gene clearly struggled with finding himself, making a place for himself in this world. And it was never guaranteed that he would ever come back. So it makes sense for them to not be in touch during the time skip.
Yes you can stay friends with someone you were once in love with. But it's painful and not everyone can manage that.
Their relationship was different and hence the weirdness.
