We can get the depth without the backstory taking up a whole season. The issue is that author didn’t plan this well and inserted too many unnecessary details. The thing that is a solution is giving an abridged version of backstory in the main story and making a prequel with all the details that author wants.
people who does not like the current season just wants romance and not the plot/storyline. they don't care about the depth of the story. if it is Ian, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't skip any of this as it would answer all of his questions
