wasn't issei also saying how he was smarter than everyone else in the class, so he couldn't have gotten held back? idk it makes no sense

I think it's not that they're in the same class/,grade but that the kids of different grades just know one another and thus play together. In the japanese country side classes can be very small with just a few students in each grade
look at the captions, both of them had 6th grade attached to them so it meant they were in the same grade as kids
huh? in chapter 1 isn't chihiro said to be a year older and is in a higher year (high school) than issei? then how come they're in the same classroom and same grade (6th grade) in chapter 2? did issei get held back? but even then, he's a year younger. did he get into school very young and then got held back a year during junior high school? huh
