pretty sure it is a very old but widespread philosophy, to stay a family even when you're thorough and done with each other. Even though nowadays are more flexible, doesn't mean this concept is fully erased in this modern time
i don't agree with his ex-wife's cheating but no one should feel tied down to their partner just bc they have a kid. an unhappy parent MIGHT end up taking their frustrations out on their kid if the only thing that's keeping them from getting a divorce is their child. also, if they feel like they're no longer mentally stable enough to co-parent, then they should talk and decide what'll be in the best interests of both the child and the parents. a happy parent = a happy childhood
