Even when they were in their male counterpart there was still romantic subtext. Given that there wasn't a romantic subtext whenever Puppy/Potato is still a kid but there had been numerous times where their adult version hinted on it. I think people just tend to ignore it or pretend it didn't happen but I think this chapter should clear that up now. I suggest just not reading it if you don't like it
