Trauma, emotional neglect, low self esteem. For someone so used to emotional neglect and abuse having someone treat them can be scary.
The way these people react to even minor responses can seem ridiculous to others but in their head they're always on edge waiting for things to ho wrong brcause that's what they're used to. MC has a mild case of this and acts a bit foolishly as a result. All his dumb logic and actions stem from a fear of losing the new affection he has. In a attempt to protect himself he's going to ruin what he has.
