He is just being a child. He didn't appreciate the toy when he had it and ended up discarding it now that someone else is playing with his toy and he is not the actual owner of the toy he wants it back. Its all very childish in a way but too toxic in a relationship between two adults.
There are really some people like this out there and they're usually the ones that go on to murder their partners.
