Honestly, I get the ending. Emotionally, Donald has been running away from his trauma in the most unhealthy way. Like Jake said, he wanted someone to stop him, to save him but nobody did. He kept pushing further and further to run away from his own shadow. That's why when he was saying that maybe he and Gray would've been friend if they just met a tad bit earlier; before he's gone too far hits me the hardest. He knew Gray could've stopped him and save him but it was too late so understandably, he took the most drastic measure to stop himself. It's a bittersweet ending.
