I hate the "lose weight to become attractive" trophe, but in this case it's perfectly fine. Bc he still finds the other person attractive regardless of whether others think he's fat or not, and the partner is only losing weight for his own self-esteem, not because he feels like he can't be loved if he doesn't.
More like, he's trying to improve himself for his partner's sake? And I love that? Because neither of them would dislike the other no matter if they were fat or not
