He's going through puberty and doesn't know how to control it, his own body is betraying him and making him do things he wouldn't have done if the spirit at the river didn't tell him a way to make the Lord his lover forever.
That's why in the main story whenever he's merely sick he'd have sex with that other dude and always end up passing out.
