…you’re not going to like this. I’ll be blunt, the brother is straight up raping and sexually assaulting the MC, no holds barred, almost as if it’s his life’s mission to do this apart from working, sleeping, and eating, and as of the time of this comment there’s only 4 chapters up here. The story itself is already quick paced, so it doesn’t flow all too well, but it gets straight to the point. After a fight where both mc and her boyfriend, Yugo, both regret what they say and do, mc spirals a bit. It’s not overwhelming, but it’s clear she’s distressed about the business trip taking place when she most wanted to make up with Yugo, to the point she turns to alcohol to console her, as well as venting to her very newly appointed boss who’s been nothing but kind and charismatic towards her. And although she is a fully grown adult capable of consent, she is very much under the influence with a myriad of negative feelings, to the point she rationalizes that it doesn’t matter that that happens because it’s not like anything will get any better.
While I am all for consuming media for fun, whether to help or unwind after a long day, I think it’s still important people apply some critical thinking when doing so, especially when victim blaming. No one is hurt, technically, by someone reading a rape fetish manga, but if it’s something they’re continually consuming, it’s especially important to separate fiction from reality, and understand how one influences the other. Especially as these characters are Japanese, as opposed to American, living in a society where it’s traditionally more reserved making it all the more difficult to confide in others and resolve these kinds of heinous situations. One wrong move, one wrong word, and it can take even a deadly turn. Though MC doesn’t show all that much fear, which I assume is for the sake of the rape fetish plot, she is clearly showing signs of remorse and guilt, and she is still every bit a victim. The brother knows clearly what he’s doing, but whether he knew she was his brother’s girlfriend from the beginning is still unknown. Regardless if he didn’t, even if he could get any other woman normally, as an abuser he’s already locked onto her.
I say all this because it’s driving me nuts MC is being insulted and ridiculed by other readers, and those comments were really what drove me to reading… this. I personally don’t like it, but after seeing the reverse harem tag, I also grew curious to see how such a thing can unfold from such a shocking title. The actual execution of this manga shocked me a little, and the comments are very much less impressive after actually reading.
To end this, I do want to touch upon Yugo specifically, and give my own opinion on him. So far, he’s an interesting character, and probably the one that intrigues me the most despite the fact he’s probably had the least screen time. From the get go, from the initial argument between him and MC, we can see that he has a heart of gold that’s also worn on his sleeve. Unfortunately, it’s also matched with this childlike naiveness, as he gives his friend more money than he can afford to give, with no contingency plan for himself and MC. MC is rightfully upset by this, because having a stable financial situation is so important and we have no clue what Yugo works as, if he works at all, at this point in the story. It takes him several days, but he’s able to reflect on what he did wrong and is able to apologize properly, which is incredibly important for relationships. He does his best to try and take responsibility, turning to family for help and focusing more on the relationship, which he claims to “make MC fall in love with him more” with the thought of marriage in mind. He doesn’t suspect his brother of any foul play at all, which is unfortunately far more common in real life than you’d think with family members, and is overall this picture perfect partner. This image of him is incredibly amped up whenever MC is filled with more intense feeling of regret and guilt, as indicated when he apologizes after the rape scene, and is going on about how he’s going to be much more attentive during the phone call sexual assault scene. These scenes especially intrigue me because of the reverse harem tag, and seeing how this is ongoing, I’m especially convinced he’s going to find out about this. It leaves me wondering how he’s going to react. The reverse harem tag almost implies he’s going to feel more competitive against his brother than anything. Sure, he may feel betrayed, but seeing MC with his brother might fill him with a type of anguish that’ll lead him to rape MC, have him apologizing, then start integrating into this open competitiveness with his brother with somewhat less resistance from MC. (note I’m not saying at any point she is consenting). This, however, conflicts with his current image of this almost golden retriever boyfriend. Someone who’s so caring, soft, thoughtful, and able to straighten himself out, would not partake in that. For such a thing to happen, he definitely has to have his own secrets, fears, and complicated backstory to make even a modicum of sense. In real life, there’s not usually an understandable reason, but to make the story in the world of fiction work and make sense, there must be, so I’m most curious about him, but I don’t have the highest expectation from this manga with the most skin deep representations of human emotion for the sake of satisfying a rape fetish.
If someone actually read this word vomit when I should have been asleep an hour ago, uh thanks and congrats, but if you didn’t then and just wanted to see if I have a TLDR then, ,
TLDR: I got annoyed by people victim blaming MC in this rape fetish manga so I actually read it and my favorite character so far is the oblivious boyfriend Yugo, but this manga still sucks IMO.
