My guess is they just wanted something to bind them together before before enlisting since many couples broke up over that. They were in the closet and couldn't get married, so the only way they could think of was to at least come out to their family. Well, maybe.
This is why you don't come out until you're financially stable. Just pretend to be friends until then. Use your heads. I know it's hard to keep it a secret but it's harder being homeless or struggling financially.
