Yeah i'd really hoped that they were just platonic friends...
But they are still platonic until Hijiri get into college and Sachio in highschool.
And the age gap actually 3 years. Means on middle school Sachio is 14-15 yo.
Still a bit iffy, but isn't as horrible as age gap on other mangas.

Tried googling it and apparently third year middle school in Japan is around 13-14 year old and hijiri is 3 years older than him so that makes him around 17-18.
