It’s setting the tone for the next season to deal with the anxiety of being a gay couple in a country that doesn’t approve of same sex marriage. I do believe the elders would be shocked at first but they’ll come around because they really do love the head of the village and wish him happiness. I do forsee some kind of break up though, at least for a moment
