The ML is using the homophobia as a vehicle for his hatred and jealousy of MC with other guys. He's also using it to alienate MC from closeness with other dudes/suitors. In future chapters we see him beating up bullies accusing MC of looking gay in highschool. Next shot is a thought process of his, about keeping MC safe in the metaphoric walls he made. MC is open about being gay at this point, and that makes things difficult for his "walls"
