I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN i’m not actually opposed to reading stories with stupid plot lines, but the execution in some of these manhwas are meh at best. most stories also have such a dragged out plot and so much filler that you end up forgetting what the whole point of the story was in the first place (i’m looking at you monochrome rumor). either that or it’s just chapter after chapter of mindless smut that doesn’t actually add anything to further the plot
Yeah, I know what you mean. Unfortunately, the trend right now is those abusive red flag type of relationships. There still are good BLs out there. It's just not getting any recognition because, like what I said, abusive relationships are the craze now.
A lot of BLs from the very start are very immature but back then, it was at least balanced out with good ones but now the ratio is not as good. If I were an author who created a bl before with plot so beautiful and well taught characters but didn't make much profit, then I would opt for a different approach in my next story.
And I have always found it weird. When I discovered bl before, it wasn't a popular genre (it was known of course but not as much like now) and imagine my shock when I found a lot of peeps I personally and don't personally know suddenly taking interest last year and most of them are fetishizers who ride only with the flow. You may call this gatekeeping and I would say it is but they make it their 'personality' to the point of annoying when the bl they praise are questionable. Actually, even some bl veterans I encountered still do this.
These are the same people that encourage incompetent authors/creators to create visually appealing characters whose appeals end on their visuals.These creators make something that would feed readers and even themselves delusions as they sometimes portray themselves as the mc and what they would like to experience if they're the mc. Disgusting. (It's fine to admire characters if the reason you would want to someone like them are their personalities and sentiments but if it's solely for the reason you want them is be fucked by them, I...)
Note that I don't think it ends with just bls but as well other genres currently experiencing this crisis. It's always been there but it's more adamant now due to social media. I always put it to mind whenever I read older literature that sometimes, old authors didn't know better because their generation's not as enlightened but modern authors really who do such always make me raise my eyebrow.

Weak ass plots, childish characters with their behavior, fantasizing abuse.. i kinda miss BL authors who can deliver plot so beautifully, can balance storyline and smut scenes and especially strong, well taught characters. Or even authors who can add sensitive topics appropriately..
Nowadays, most of them are so incompetent, you can find better stories in Wattpad. It's even as if BL authors are those newbie wattpad writers.
