Actual analysis:
From what im gathering, i dont think the story is saying he is mean but that his kindness isnt genuine and he only does that bc he wants to be seen as a good person in his moms eyes. And kindness is only genuine if its something you want to do not something you feel obliged to do bc you were told too.
Im sure this story plans on delving into how ingenine he is and how that has a negative effect on him and the others around him. How just doing what your told doesnt mean you have sound morals.
Ex. Him not fully turning the oFl down which lead to misunderstandings and seemingly lead her on. While its not his fault she reacted the way she did, he never fully turned her down bc he though he was being 'kind'.
I see this as the 'People pleaser effect' in an effort to make others happy by being 'kind' and doing what they want or avoiding it by lying, he is essentially hurting himself and the people around them like oFl. He uses his 'kindness' to manipulate people so that he can avoid their unhappiness. And if he cant do that he will lie to avoid it. Like what he did at the party where the oFl caused a scene. He lied to her abt going bc he didnt want to take her but didnt want to hurt her w/rejection, he assumed she would not go but she did he got caught.
Our now FL has those memories and sees that, she doesnt like it understandably but she isnt saying he is a bad person she just wants him to stop his Fakeness. Which I understand Like dont help me if you dont genuinely want to its a waste of mine and your time. And im sure she feels similar.
So his politeness isnt a problem but his kindness is a manipulation tactic (whether its intention or not is yet to be seen bc many people pleasers dont realize theyre being manipulative since theyre kinda raised that way).
His arc will probs end one or two ways, him slowly over coming his ppl pleasing behavior. Or him doubling down and completely pissing off our FL. We will see tho.
