That is what I thought as soon as I saw that
my thoughts too but he was a young child, so in either case it's not romantic love yet, would kinda be a stretch to make him love his friend as an adult bc of a puppy crush he had then..unless it's the cliché 'i thought it was love but now i realise it wasn't' haha
The double shadowing convinces me that the reason why he liked the "childhood friend" is because he found the same kind of comfort in both their words when he was going through a hard time
