I was surprised actually of how he turned out to be,,, I was thinking there could be something worse for him in personality apart from having a low self esteem. Maybe his granny helped in some way to with being soft
His grandma is an angel. How else is he going to grow up? They might have been poor, but Dan surely grew up with so much love and affection from his grandma
