u put it perfectly. the way the author purposely finishes this chapter with that comment makes it pretty clear they're trying to send a message not just through narration, but through the actions and thoughts of the characters themselves.
the entire chapter: abuse creates victims who are at risk of overcompensating as a trauma reaction and in turn becoming abusers themselves
