Being loyal yet respectful to your enemy or adversary is a chivalrous thing especially for knights. In mcs case he saved the pilgrimage but aided the other brother in completing his task. As a Knight it seems mc made the right choice and is why he is awarded
It's simple. It wasn't the short haired guy who found him. Wasn't the short haired guy who gave him a chance to rise up to where he is now. I don't care if the other brother offers riches and whatever else. If our MC sides with him, I'd be sorely disappointed. He's shown loyalty to those who raised him and great loyalty at that. If he betrays his leige, I'd question everything he's worked hard towards.
