I think it has more to do to with accessibility. Now it's much easier to access manhwas, there are different platforms, they upload regularly and in different languages so it's only normal to see why it's popularity increased.
It's crazy for how long I've been reading this! I remember back in the day Viewfinder always used to be at the top of mangago's popularity top (when it existed), before manhwas blew up as much as now and manhuas weren't that common.
