I kinda feel like Eugene was groomed and the priest knows what he was doing to him. Eugene finally realizing this now. Also, I'm sure the priest doesn't love Eugene from the begining and gaslight him to believe it was Eugene fault the ritual didn't work. He just wanted control of him.
