It´s getting kind of old, but I guess for the sake of giving main characters layers/depth, it is often used.
Let´s be real- in real life, quite often parents or parent or other siblings and relatives abuse kids :-( No child deserves that!
Yes, "quite often," but it isn't the norm. I'd say it doesn't really matter that the author decided to go this route in the end because I don't really readers complain about this trope more than readers enjoying it (and I mean cursing at the abusive parents and all haha). xD

I think abuse is pretty often in poorer communities like that is what i always see in tv reality stories
