Oh that was a twist.

The girlfriend was trans.

Was it really just a mugging? Or a targeted hate crime? Or was it a member of the birth family?

Not unheard of for family of queer people to murder them. For that matter, it's not unheard for parents to murder their kids or siblings to kill each other.

Trans women face higher homicide rates than any other demographic with black trans women at the very highest.

This just opened up a lot more questions.

Were other trans women being targeted at the same time? Were women of a certain look? Was this a serial mugger crime? Serial rape gone bad?

P.S. 2 things that bug me.

1) Arthur should know that he HAD to be taken off the case because he became a victim. It is absolutely stupid to think Silas had to do something to get him removed.

A victim or anyone close to them (friend, partner, family, etc) CANNOT investigate the perps. The DA/Judge would toss the case because all the evidence could educate seen as tainted and even if there was a conviction the Appeals court would toss it and ALL evidence gathered by that person, fruit of the poisoned tree and all that.

2) a victim's family has NO RIGHT to end a MURDER INVESTIGATION. They may not want to cooperate and even be hostile, but by law a homicide case has NO STATUE OF LIMITATIONS and can be re-investigated.

A closed case means that they believe they caught the murderer or the one they presumed to be the murderer is dead or in jail.

The case may have gone COLD but it CANNOT be CLOSED. And there are cold cases that are DECADES old that get reopened all the time. Just watch Cold Justice about real cold cases.

But if that family was SPECIAL with certain POWER and PRIVILEGES then they could exert power to shut it down but it's never gone gone. Not unless cops did illegal stuff like destroying evidence.

There are warehouses where evidence goes. There are records of who had access to it. There are itemized lists of what should be in the evidence boxes.

If there is new credible evidence (even just a anonymous tip on it) just about any case can be reopened.

Which leads me to believe that Jones may be a lazy corrupt cop but orders came from up top.

And that case is SHADY.
