Thanks for the honest explanation! I won't waste my time on this

I would disagree with most comments
I found the beginning very harsh and dry the MC is weak, he knows it, and he is used to lay low, to see people dying around him. He learned to freeze , so yes, he can just stay still and let someone he cares for get attacked and die next to him without reacting to save himself .
This is very odd to me, but not that strange if you consider he’s a normal human, being a guide for superhuman fighting super monsters : how long would he have lasted if not for that ?

Then i read some people complaining he seldom uses his ability
I particularly enjoyed he put some restrictions to it : to me it makes sense and it is much more enjoyable :
how would you feel if a voice suddenly taunted you into killing nearly anyone with supernatural abilities ?
That includes friends and teammates, there’s no restriction from your feelings
Would you trust that voice or want to keep control ?
I enjoy the author did put a lot of of limits to this absolutely broken power
If the MC started to devour anyone, the story would be over within few chapters, he would either beat monsters or be hunted for good reasons
Instead of that the MC wants to keep his rationality, but also to hide this vicious ability
The power is difficult to absorb, he literally faints in the beginning : he needs time to grow, but passing out puts him in extreme danger
Then, despite being cold and a loner, he has strong moral boundaries : he kills and steels from very bad guys, he doesn’t randomly vampirises anyone for the sake of being stronger : thank god ?

Lastly he needs to master the use of core abilities
All these rare restrictions made it enjoyable for me : he doesn’t become a god in 20c, he needs to learn, struggle, get bitten, his life feels truly in danger and many are stronger than him : growth takes time
I love it, it brings tension !
i’m tired of these OP characters who turn into ssss super humans over night and predictably beat the crap out of anything

Lastly i also don’t think the MC is dumb : we only perceive the signs that somethings are wrong because he shows us
That alone proves he is not that dumb
But I also think it’s in the same vein as having an OP power isn’t it all : because he has regressors memory doesn’t mean he knows or understands all , even less that he can stop or prevent all bad things or save anyone
I also appreciate the author pointing many times that foreign memories are confusing

As for why and how he didn’t make the perfect guess from his observations :
A long time loner won’t easily trust , evenless a boss he just met ?
We don’t know all the rules of this military system : would a mere rookie suspicion have effect ? What if he suspects someone with a good reputation ,
We also don’t know all about the powers and
how they affect individuals. Maybe he had valid reasons not to doubt his intuition : obviously stronger beings might not be influenced as easily the weaker ones?

The MC is an incomplete, imperfect and young, he has much to learn and plenty room to grow As a reader , i feel like this is a merit, not a flaw , in fact it makes more sense than the opposite

But that defeats the purpose of a powerful main character

I would be really interested in knowing what you find interesting in super strong character ?
Doesn’t it make the story too predictable ? What do you find in there ?

Ik you didn't ask me in particular, but I understood the points you made in your comment about mc and hope you don't mind having one more answer to that since my pov might differ from others... ^^
In my case, I read op male mc with 0 to little romance for an specific reason... to get the satisfying feeling I can't find in female mc's comics. We almost never get op female mc's and when we do... they usually act like a bit like this mc... hiding their power, fighting themselves to keep their morals and being good and overall... not using their abilities to the fullest because of the chains of morals and emotions... and when the ml appears they get even more nerfed. No matter how strong or smart or anything else they will always have to depend on ml's help just to survive or get what should be theirs by right.
So when I read about an op mc, usually male, I want to see them get revenge, get strong, not be oppressed or dependent on others opinion and things like that. Going from weak to strong and from dumb/naive to smart is good, but when the growth is too slow (which I felt from this) or mc is too cautious it frustrates me...
Tbh is kinda like why I dropped genius blinker and the one about a normal guy that gets in a villain character and can't go ooc... I wanted to see their growth, how they survive, how they use their powers smartly to get out of their predicament and such... but more than half of the comic/novel focus on the female leads (candidates) their problems, their story and their changing feelings towards the mc's... I went for action and got slow romance instead... like when you go read a isekai comic and they focus too much on the harem... that sort of thing.
Back to this comic... I think I'd like it more if mc was a villain/anti-hero using his smarts to stay under the radar and struggling to control his urges than a good guy with an evil power trying hard to stay good and avoiding using the power. Both can be interesting but the former is more my taste...
Sorry it got long but I hope I was able to explain my pov... ^^

This. Is not about it being predictable because a weak character is pretty predictable and frustrating because it followes a certain pattern of misery.
But a strong one that knows they are and acts like it with a purpose gives a breath of fresh air. I'm not saying that they can do whatever they want but you can bet that they can hold their own in a fight and are capable enough to fulfill their goal, be it revenge or save the world.
The fights are also more satisfying, because just because they are strong doesn't mean they don't struggle, they do, but you get to see how they think of any and all ways they can survive and grow because they know that failing here means death or something worse
At the end of the day it honestly doesn't feel predictable, because even them will find a challenge, but it's 10 times better and less frustrating than a weak or average main character

Many thanks, i am absolutely grateful for your insight ! :)
In the end, we would absolutely agree the dreadful thing is the predictablity and patterns?
I also don’t see the point in miserable tropes (and absolutely dislike all things related to child abuse as way to tear jerk and build easy background. The MC being weak certainly doesn’t warrants a better story, you’re right.
I personnally enjoy character growth. I don’t mind the character being a semi god or your next door neighboor, as long as there’s developpement, discovery and even better, a bit of human questionning.:)

Maybe my question comes from reading a few sickening mean chinese titles which really pushed the OP to a bore ?(there are good chinese ones, though)

Also way too often, i feel bored when the character reach a level in which i don’t feel anymore challenge. It feels like the world is a mere sandbox and they can do anything : then my initial satisfaction goes down the drain
Like, seriously what is the point ? And way toi often, it is also very predictable

In the end i find it pretty rare to love a story from the begining to the end.
If you have a few good suggestion i would gladly hear you :)

(I hope my taping from a phone won’t make too many typo)

Oh yeah... the ch can have some real bad stories with op characters... and the novel to comic adaptations are horrendous... to me jp kr and ch have all their own troubles... jp are usually pervs, kr the saviour complex and ch the braggarts... it all depends on the tolerance of the day...
On the topic of growth... I'd suggest a novel called "Cannon fodder records of counterattacks" it's a long one with more than 4k chapters... but it's world-hopping (like cheating men must die) so each arc is a different world and plot where the mc goes and do missions. There's absolutely no romance and she starts frustratingly weak and grow all by her own efforts since the "store" and her "system" aren't of much help... some worlds are easier and some harder... so yeah... it's one with the best character growth I've read in a while and as its by arcs it's easier to stop at some point if you get bored and then start again later. Its not fully translated but the translation is pretty advanced. You'll find it in novelupdates. There's a comic adaptation but I believe it was dropped long ago. But it's good to read to get a feel of their appearances.
On the comics department I cand say much cuz I dont tend to see much growth tbh... and currently I'm more on the idols and op modern dungeon genres... I guess Greatest estate developer is always a good recommendation... so is Trash of count's family... Debut or die, Rogue producer survives as idol and Tidal wave of Glory for showbiz ones... Kill the hero was an interesting one... Pick me up and 100th Regression

100th Regression of the max level player. I also like I'll become the matriarch in this life, I became the male lead's adopted daughter, Holy emperor's grandson is a necromancer and Growing tired of the lazy high elf life after 120 years...
Those are some comics I keep up with...
Honestly I'm a bit tired of comics so I'll probably go for novels for some time... but yeah at some point it all feels like more of the same and gets boring...
