
I think it's about how the majority of the church's finances came from nobles and the royalty, so proclaiming that the royal government shouldn't have anything to do with the church is a fallacy. That's like telling your biggest investor that they have no right to look at the financial statement of the company they're investing.
Nowadays, legal churches are tax exempt but they have to file tax reports to be able to maintain that tax exemption from the government. Most of the time, they do have to pay taxes because they have other business under the church that are purely transactional since a church (especially if large) can't run properly from donations alone.
