He died an unfated death and when a person dies an unfated death, they can make wishes. His wish was that he would keep his memories so that he can stay away from Ines so he doesn’t hurt her again. However, when memories are given that way, it’s not like he remembers his previous life as a baby unlike Ines who remembers from 6 years old because she regressed. Instead, the painter gets memories like someone who sees visions from an earlier life. Kind of like the same as if Carcel gets memories. Both will only get certain memories at certain times and they treat them as though they are memories belonging to a previous version of themselves. So the painter received sporadic memories of that previous life maybe around his late teens to early 20s. As a result, he seemed to have forgotten the wish he made and tried to interfere in Ines’s life and that’s how he ended up leaving an imitation pendant for Ines to find.
The thing is, Ines has moved on from the pendant and is no longer interested in finding out about the owner. That’s why the story shifts to Carcel making the discoveries.
