I'm not sure what to tell you. I read this on my third try I also couldn't get to it at first, for some reason, but after finally reading it I always come to re-read it. The uke's inferiority complex and obsession doesn't get better till the extra chapters I believe, he kinda realizes is not that he wants to be better but more like he wants the seme's attention. It's definitely toxic but I'd give it one more try and finish it. At least the plot, in my opinion, is very good.
I skip those first chapters everytime on my reread cause it's definitely painful seeing him so obsessed but dw he gets better. He himself acknowledges about his unhealthy obsession towards the end(and it's such a beautiful moment)and the ml too questions his thought process at times so it's not shrugged off. It's definitely worth the read, seeing him change his attitude and their growing relationship. You will definitely dislike him until halfway through the story but again, toward the end, you'll come to love or atleast be ok with him dw. Personally, i love him.
