Just wait until the hidden timeline is revealed and the reader see the awful things Ines tells him and he apologizes. Even present day Ines gets scared of hearing her original self say those things and wonder how she could intentionally hurt him like that. Meanwhile, in those memories he apologizes to her and is concerned about her even when she’s the one clearly in the wrong. It shows he is fundamentally a good person and a much better person than her. Even she objectively knows this
