I think that he might have hated Helmi in the beginning.But he developed a need to be better than Helm and is obsessed with him. Honestly I think it’s more so that he wants Helm not not be seen as worth anything that’s why he hurts him so other people don’t hang with him .But the problem is people eventually like him so, he kills anyone who gets too close to him.Notice how the colleague from his work is alright but he doesn’t really have much care for Helm.

wait that actually makes sense it could be that he was protecting helm by not making him do anything or make helm seems like he's not worth anything so the elders or some other person with power would lose interest on him but at the same time he's obsessed with helm to the point of not letting anyone close to him. and since helm is not listening he resorted to violence (to make him listen)
