It's not "saving" him from being a black flag. I think it's pretty much established what his character is, it just provides more context/backstory about their relationship before. Reading the novel I don't think there's any attempt at redemption lol just acceptance that the story is like this and ml's character is like that, so yeah if this isn't for you then just drop it rather than mentioning being "not mentally ill to read it"
Honestly, the childhood story ain't even saving this dude from being a black flag. He's just a rapist who has weird obsessions with her because apparently, she's not afraid of blood like other people. And I got the ick when the author tries to push the 'has been in love since childhood' narrative after the mc is trash and had left a not so good impression from the start. Not even interested to know how this is gonna turn out the be a 'romance' (as per the genre it says) and I'm really not that mentally ill to even continue reading it
