I get your point, but after reading the chapters again, he's not mad for no reason. As much as it displeases us & Maxi, we all know why he is angry. He's made it clear he was opposed to her coming. He is an actual mercenary not just an unreasonable husband. Maxi has been having self confidence issues too (we been knew *sigh*) He could do better tho, but I can't blame him for what's happening.

Let's put this campaign aside. Before Maxi even tried to join or help in any way, she was just trying to learn magic, do things, be useful and Riftan would be angry at her for so long because she's frail. Right now he kinda has a reason to be annoyed since he has to care for his wife instead of concentrating on the trip, but he's not letting her do anything and he's never congratulated her in anything. I love Riftan, but I wish they didnt make his character so angry all the time

Her self confidence issues predate Riftan. She would not be some great mage with unshakable self confidence just because of him. And she has thrived since being with him compared to how she was before. It's also not his responsibility to fix her. He has other things to do, and other things to work on. They're both very hurt people doing their best.

Actually, the reason why he's avoiding Maci is because Riftan is just a horny lil shit. LMAO.
But the reason why Riftan is angry at Maxi for doing things a warrior, mage, or a commoner should do is that he wants to treat her as a Noble who doesn't moves their fingers to do such. Idk if it's a complex, but it was mentioned that he's trying to live up or treat her as a noble is treated since she's from a high noble family (tho he doesn't know that she's far from getting treated like that since she was abuse her whole life)

I remember him saying that he can't bear seeing Maxi in a place like this and that when he brought Maxi to Anatol, he had no intention of putting her in a place like "that".
Anw, I think Riftan doesn't undermine Maxi's capability. He's just worried that her safety may be compromised since she's a noble and all. Being able to grow as a mage doesn't mean she'll have the experience to go to a battle. I say his worry is justified.
You know maybe if Riftan didnt discourage her so much mentally she probably would of had the confidence and energy to cast that barrier. Stupid Riftan.
