Waiting for the truth to come out

I’m enjoying this quite a bit.

Yes, Maxi has a long road ahead of her to heal herself, but she’s also been with Riften (like in person) for maybe 6 months or a bit more at this point and her past abuse is a definite hinderance to learning when to stop/she doesn’t need to overdo it (especially in this new environment where everyone is accepting of her and she’s compelled even more to give back to them but they’re also her employees and don’t tell her what to do really - minus Riftan, of course), so I get that it’ll be a while before she feels confident that he won’t abandon her and actually tell him the truth of her upbringing - DYING to see this scene.

Also I commend that she took the initiative to learn about monsters herself from the library books and I like that Ruth always helps her out (like getting her better books about monster info and getting info on mouth muscle exercises). I do agree that Riftan (or one of the other knights/squires) should’ve prepped her, but his character is stubborn and quick to temper (like he even said it himself back in the beginning chapters) and with how determined he was to NOT have her come, I can see that never being something he even considered as a possibility so long as he had a say in it. Like she had to point out to him that even though he wanted her to live in luxury (and has been going for that goal like a racehorse with blinders on-not even wanting her to get used to seeing monsters or injured people), that isn’t what she wanted for her life.

I’m just SUPER anticipating how they get to a point where he realizes that what she needs for herself is to be needed as as person (since her dad got it into her head that she’s absolutely useless as an existence) and she realizes that he always valued her (cuz they’ve been hinting that he knew her before and somehow fell in love with her back then - I just hope it isn’t love at first sight since I don’t see that helping her sense of self).
