Overall the bottom is the toxic one in between them. The top seems to only be forced by arranged marriage that's why he did that, he can't elope with the bottom, because after all he's someone who can't just disappear from his role and rank.
What the top did to the bottom was betrayal but in a sense it's not too extreme. Not extreme in a sense that the bottom was never abused by the top, he didn't cut his hair off too, so the top didn't deserve the treatment he received from the bottom.
