I'm possibly thinking it could be a confidence thing. Like without glasses he doesn't have the confidence to face other people including his family due to the problems he's had and feels he's caused. Yes, they can see him, but in a way it makes him feel more confident. Kind of like a kid wearing a superhero cape. That's my guess
To add onto this. The glasses could also be a "barrier" in a way. Like the glasses are what blocks him from other people when he feels like he needs to hide. But now that things have changed and he stops using them... it's almost like he's saying that 1. He had more confidence now and 2. He no longer needs to hide behind glasses

Not sure how it is in different countries, but glasses also symbolizes a hindrance to your soul- as your eyes are the opening to it/to your real emotions and thoughts!! It’s often seen in manga etc. as a way to protect yourself from others peoples opinions!
Maybe bc the glass make him avoid eye contact by Taking the glasses and lowering his head . In the first chapter we see him always use his glasses like that ( that why he was like a nerd for some people). I think. I don’t know how to explain correctly sorry
