Well technically, he was made this way by his mom and sickass adults.

Towa's mom is a sociopath. She doesn't feel empathy and doesn't know how to love. She purposely slept w Towa's dad (rich n is a leader of a gang) and thanks to her manipulation skills and her being a sick woman, she's his favorite mistress and she also gained respect and love from other by knowing how to act and read them (Taku - the doctor is also one of the ppl who adored her and looked up to her)
In her twisted way, she claimed to love her son (Towa) by literally selling him to her clients and letting them tormenting him, abusing him, raping him and cutting his flesh WHEN HE WAS A CHILD.
Until Towa met a girl (who got sold off to Towa's mom by her mom for some money - The lawyer guy Fujieda is her older brother trying to climb his way up to the top to have power to find her) she is a strong minded girl who doesn't kneel down to her circumstances, she taught Towa that it's not ok to be treated like that, that he's not his mom's property and he's his own person and never give up.
The mom noticed the change in Towa as he became distant and more rebellious against her, she claimed the girl to be a wicked demon and separated them apart (they were used as a pair in abusive acts because they're pretty children) and killed her. Later when Towa had enough of his mom, they had a fight near the staircase and out of defense, Towa pushed his mom off the staircase and he got dragged down w her.
The mom shortly died (literally ordered/manipulated her henchman that she wants Towa to become her and inherit her role). Towa who already had scattered memories due to trauma now lost even more memories. At this time, Taku stepped in and brought him w him, he used pills to "help" Towa suppress his traumas aka ALL his memories.
So now Towa is left still broke, with his instinct is him wanting pain and torment as that’s all he ever has, he uses pain and punishment on himself because he's afraid of losing himself and the only thing he has. Other than that, despite losing memories, Towa still remembers his mom's tactics because she taught him the art of persuasion and manipulation (everyday, esp she taught him that like reading him a bedtime story and only allowed him to read psychology books)
