i’m thinking lowen must’ve found out about the colonel back when they were secretly meeting, and forced evelyn to send him away for life. i also think she knows he’s not dead- so if lowen sees that they’re together he might kill the colonel- and that’s the last thing she wants so she puts up this front as if she hates him.
